Special Enrollment Period
A special enrollment period is fixed timeframe (e.g. 6 weeks) in which a person may enroll in a health insurance plan outside the plan’s normal annual enrollment period. Typically a special enrollment period is triggered when one or more approved conditions are met (e.g. marriage, the birth of a child, or the loss of employer-based medical coverage). These conditions are usually major life events.
